To honour her work and commitment in the field of health and inequalities in particular Indigenous Canadian communities.

This was Dr. Janet Smylie’s response to the award:

“There is an interesting tension between my Metis-Cree teachings of humility, the unsung everyday heroes that I interact with everyday in my Indigenous community and institutional work and personal life, and the number of awards I receive, however I am told by some that it is important for others to see me out there.

This one is particularly meaningful because of its conflict resolution focus. The colleagues who nominated me indicated that they see the work I am doing at naming and trying to address underlying roots of European colonization as a form of conflict resolution – as they see European colonization as an ongoing conflict.”
